Note to any visitors

This is a holding area for random things I come across that may have use for my dissertation. This page pulls links from several RSS feeds, so it may take a few seconds to load.

It is a mess of dis-jointed sources on libraries, the future of information use, higher education, and conducting research by undergraduates.

STIMULATED RECALL AND MENTAL MODELS: TOOLS FOR TEACHING AND LEARNING COMPUTER INFORMATION LITERACY by Lyn Henderson and Julie Tallman new book ordered for our library. Review from Teacher-Librarian (April 2006):

"Much discussion and research has taken place with children as they conduct research. The most famous is the Kuhlthau studies of students and their behavior during the entire research process...But what is the view of the process from the person teaching the process? Henderson and Tallman conducted extensive case studies of different teacher-librarians as they taught a single student to use a database. They did interviews about their perceptions of teaching before the search began; they recorded the teaching of the student; and they did a postinterview of each teacher-librarian's perception again.

The authors title their interview tactic a stimulated recoil, and they are searching for the teacher-librarian's mental model of the teaching act. The authors spend a great deal of time discussing their methodology, reporting the case, and presenting their findings. In the process, the researchers learn a great deal about interviewing to discern a person's mental model as a teacher. Their task in future research is to look at the student's mental model during the teaching process to see what matches and how the act of teaching and learning could be improved." (page 46)

Bill Crowley's cultural pragmatism advanced in my Spanning the Theory-Practice Divide in Library and Information Science in their dissertations. Since theory development and influences are quite personal...it seems to be of interest even in that abode of information orthodoxy, the “Information School” at the University of Washington

The EDUCAUSE Center for Applied Research (ECAR) made available its 2005 study on students and information technology. The primary findings relate to students’ preferences for the use of technology in their courses, and their is some good information about the impact of course management systems. While use of library resources is a lesser aspect of the study there is some data offered that I believe provides some cause for optimism among academic librarians.
